PMS - Symptoms PMS did not exist 100 years ago and was not even recognized 50 years ago. It is a phenomena associated with the modern way of living in western industrialized countries. The symptoms of PMS begin 7 - 10 days before menstruation begins. Women often report a tidal wave of symptoms at their onset and dread the approach of each premenstrual time of the month. Good diet and exercise will help but the root of the problem for 90% of PMS sufferers is out of balance hormones! Women with PMS tend to have lower levels of progesterone than normal at that time of the month when progesterone is supposed to be dominant and instead, estrogen is dominant. The most common symptoms include some or all of the following: Bloating, weight gain, headache, backache, irritability, breast swelling or tenderness, loss of libido and fatigue. These are all the same symptoms that apply to estrogen dominance. The full range of symptoms include confusion, disorientation, intemperate judgments and decision making, mood swings, body aches, anger and verbal abuse, lethargy alternating with increased energy, alienation, guilt (at having abused friends), lack of self-esteem, cravings for sweets, especially for chocolate. Furthermore, every system in the body can be effected: immune, digestive, circulatory, nervous, endocrine, dematologic (skin) Victims of PMS may experience any combination of the above with severity from mild to overwhelming. The mechanism to explain the cause of PMS symptoms is not known and for this reason the symptoms are referred to as a syndrome.
